Uncertainty looms over 2024 Women’s T20 World Cup in Bangladesh

The upcoming 2024 edition of the Women’s T20 World Cup, scheduled to take place in Bangladesh from October 3-20, is facing uncertainty due to the latest developments in the country. The International Cricket Council (ICC) is in a dilemma over the security concerns arising from internal disturbances in Bangladesh, leading to discussions about potentially moving the global event to a different location.

Security concerns in Bangladesh raise alarms at ICC headquarters

Recent riots, arson, violence, protracted curfews, and internet shutdowns in Bangladesh have raised red flags at the ICC headquarters in Dubai. The safety and well-being of all participants are the top priority for the ICC, and the situation in Bangladesh has prompted the governing body to consider alternative options for hosting the tournament.

India has emerged as a strong contender to replace Bangladesh as the host country for the 2024 Women’s T20 World Cup. The ICC is closely monitoring the situation in coordination with the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) and independent security consultants to make a decision within a week.

Potential new hosts and tournament logistics

Ten teams are set to play 23 matches over 18 days at two venues in Bangladesh, the Shere Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Dhaka and the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium in Sylhet. However, the current scenario in Bangladesh makes it challenging to proceed with the tournament as planned.

In addition to India, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Sri Lanka are also being considered as potential host countries due to their proximity and favorable weather conditions. The ICC is exploring all options to ensure a safe and successful event for all participants.

Discussions between the ICC and the BCB officials will be crucial in determining the feasibility of holding the tournament in Bangladesh. While there was initial optimism about the situation improving, recent events have raised concerns about the security and logistics of hosting the Women’s T20 World Cup in the country.
