Serie A 2019/20 season has been suspended. With that in mind, it’s time to check out the leading potential contenders to win the Serie A MVP award.

Coronavirus outbreak brought to a halt the Serie A season that was promising to be a thrilling end to a terrific football season.  While officials set the initial return date for 3rd April, it is uncertain to go ahead.

Several players stood out for their respective clubs and achieved remarkable feats in the process. All this will definitely have a telling effect in the Serie A MVP race.

Here are the five leading candidates to be awarded footballer of the season in Italy’s top-flight.

Romelu Lukaku

Joining Conte’s side has transformed Lukaku after his struggles in Manchester United. It’s as if he is reborn with his scoring instincts in full swing.

Since the beginning of the season, Lukaku has been red-hot. Probably with the Belgium International, Inter Milan could win the Serie A title since 2010 even with nine points gap to Juventus.

Before football suspension, Lukaku had scored 17 goals and made two assists.

Luis Alberto

Luis has finally found his sweet spot at Lazio. He has emerged as a key figure for his side in their unexpected title assault this season. He has helped Lazio overcome Juventus 3-1 last December to win the Supercoppa Italiana.

Meanwhile, the winger has had a hand in 16 goals including a league-best of 12 assists. With a one-point deficit to the Bianconeri, Luis could end this season with a first league winner’s medal for the first time in ever in his career.

Josip Ilicic

Josip Ilicic is a name on everybody’s lips this season. From almost a nobody at the beginning of the campaign, Ilicic has stepped up for Atalanta.

The 32-year-old had a remarkable quadruple against Valencia in the Champions League recently. This gave everyone in Bergamo a morale-boosting victory.

Ilicic has made has as well-made remarkable contributions in the Serie A with 15 goals and five assists.

Cristiano Ronaldo

The Portuguese international has been red-hot ever since. After struggling to overcome his early-season injury problems, Ronaldo is back and more lethal than before.

Should things keep moving at this rate, the forward could be at level with Messi on a record six Ballon d’Or awards in December.

Ronaldo’s 21 goals and three assists make up 48% of Juventus’ 50 league goals this season.

Ciro Immobile

Immobile is not the most exciting player out there. Though, the 30-year-old really knows how to bang in the goals. His work ethic, physical presence and ability to score on both feet make him a great forward.

Prospects of having Cristiano Ronaldo as his rival has not scared Immobile off either. Instead, it has elevated his game to a whole new level-a league-best of 27 goals in 26 games supports this case.
