The Arsenal head coach, Mikel Arteta is definitely leaving no stone unturned at Arsenal and with his players even amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Mikel Arteta says he wants his Arsenal players to “feel close to me” as he attempts to build bridges with his squad during this pandemic.

The Spaniard arrived in North London as Arsenal’s new coach in December taking over from Unai Emery. Arteta took over during a whirlwind period of fixtures and off-field drama that offered him little chances to forge deep connections with the squad.

With time, the coach won the admiration of the squad for his demanding nature on the training ground. Weeks later, the COVID-19 pandemic broke in and left all football suspended to no clear dates of re-starting.

Amid the coronavirus, Arteta was among the victims. He was diagnosed with the virus on March 12 and has been unable to bring his plans into action.

After his recovery, the condition has not stopped him from planning extensive work for his squad to do from home.

Consequently, players have been handed dietary and physical plans and held regular talks with Arteta over his tactical plans. Also, the squad has been given GPS tracking devices that allow the club monitor their work.

Still, Arteta is eager to delve deeper with his squad and is keen to establish close bonds with his players during this devastating period.

Mikel Arteta

“They have the equipment; they have all the necessary tools and guidance to try to keep themselves in the best possible shape.”

“But as well I was worried about the mental side, about the disconnection with football. I’ve been trying to give them work, to get to know them better.”

“This is a good possibility, when everybody is hurt and a little bit more open about what’s going on. To get into them a little bit, to understand how their families are, what they’re doing to take care of them, their relatives, how they feel at the club, how they feel with their team-mates.”

“I want them to feel close to me. That they can trust me, tell me their feelings. We have a lot of people that live on their own, people that have family away.”

“They need to feel protected a little bit. Not just myself but the staff or the senior people at the club.”
