Former Everton manager, Roberto Martinez insists domestic football must exhaust every avenue to try and complete their seasons.

The Belgium manager, Roberto Martinez has some serious concerns about the impact of not completing the domestic leagues.

Speaking to BBC, the manager insists that canceling internationals and postponing major international events was the right thing to do.

Moreover, he believes there could be “catastrophic” consequences for clubs across Europe if domestic seasons are not completed.

However, he feels moving those events gives domestic leagues more opportunity to finish their seasons eventually. This to him is a must.

He said, “I think the only solution is to finish the campaign. You need to make sure that everyone is aware there is a big risk of sending by institutions into a very difficult financial position. That’s reality.”

“I think UEFA and FIFA have taken the right approach in prioritizing domestic football.”

“International football got canceled in the March camp, rightly so, and got canceled in the June camp. The Euros have been postponed just to give an opportunity to every league to find a solution with their contracts with TV rights.”

“If they don’t finish they will have to give the money back from TV rights and that would be a catastrophe.”

On the other hand, Belgium’s top division, the Jupiler League is also set to be canceled despite there being one regular-season game and play-offs to be played.

Nonetheless, Martinez feels the Belgian approach will not work elsewhere.

“The decision was to finish the campaign because everyone accepted that. After 29 games, if you are first, you deserve to win. If you are bottom, you deserve to be relegated.” Said Martinez.
