Premier League confirms one new positive coronavirus case

The Premier League held its seventh round of COVID-19 test amid the league’s return on 17th June. Out of 1,213 individuals tested, one confirmed a positive result.


1,213 players and members of club staff across the 20 clubs were tested on 8th and 9th June as part of the seventh round of the League’ centralized testing program.

The one positive finding marks a total of 14 positive results from 7,487 total tests conducted across the Premier League clubs.

“The Premier League can today confirm that on Monday 8th June and Tuesday 9th June, 1,213 players and club staff were tested for COVID-19”. Read the League’s statement.

“Of these, one has tested positive. The Premier League is providing this aggregated information for the purposes of competition integrity and transparency”.

“No specific details as to clubs or individuals will be provided by the league and the results will be made public after each round of testing”.

The first round of the League testing, May 17-18, saw six positive tests from a total of 748 in three clubs. The second round took place on May 19-22 resulting in two positives from two clubs after a further 996 tests.

Round three, May 25-26, saw four positive results across two clubs after 1,008 players and staff were tested. The consequent round which was conducted on May 28-29 led to no positive results from 1,130 tests as the fifth round of testing, June 1-2, produced one positive case from an unnamed person at Tottenham Hotspur.

Round six, June 4-5, showed no positive case after 1,195 more tests were carried out. The latest round of testing was conducted and one positive case was confirmed.

With few weeks to go until the Premier League resumes, Manchester United cancelled a friendly with Championship outfit Stoke City on Tuesday. The reason being Potters manager, Michael O’Neill tested positive for COVID-19.

The two sides followed strict protocols and never came into contact.
