Maguire extra-time goal sends Man Utd into FA Cup semi-finals
Captain Harry Maguire scored deep into extra-time as Manchester United overcame the valiant 10-man Norwich 2-1 to secure their place in FA Cup semi-finals.
Manchester United was below their best when they faced Norwich City in FA Cup quarter-finals. Given there was a semi-final spot at stake, there was precious minimal quality in a dull first-half at Carrow Road.
With a foothold established, Daniel Farke used the mid-half drinks break to issue instructions to his side. Truly, the Canaries emerged with new energy.
Kenny McLean lashed a shot over from 20 yards after picking Juan Mata’s pocket on the half-hour. Just before, Cantwell and Teemu had failed to convert a two-on-one counter-attack as Luke Shaw raced back to rescue United.
Cantwell laid the best chance of the first period on for Lukas Rupp on the 43 minutes. However, his fizzing effort drew a fine block from Maguire as United reached the interval unscathed.
Solskjaer resisted introducing substitutes at the break. Within six minutes of the restart, his faith in the starting XI was repaid. Shaw drilled cross was sent looping into the air by Norwich defense before Ighalo volleyed United into the lead.
The Red Devils were guilty of taking their foot off the gas as the hosts steadily grew back into contention.
Ben Godfrey has his blushed spared in the 70th minute when he denied Norwich an equalizer with a block on United’s goal line.
The pressure finally got hold of Cantwell as he made a rasping drive into the bottom corner from 25 yards that saw Sergio Romero swim into thin air.
Norwich kicked on for the winner as substitute Josip Drmic dragged a shot inches wide within minutes on. The substitution was backs to the wall with two minutes to go after Klose was shown a straight red card for denying Ighalo a goal-scoring chance.
How Captain Harry Maguire scored the winning goal
Tim Krul thwarted substitute Paul Pogba’s attempt to score the winner in the last six added minutes as Norwich forced extra-time for the second tie running.
Pogba glanced a header wide with seconds of the restart and Rashford drew a fingertip save from Krul with a dipping drive from 18 yards. Just before Pogba ended the first period of extra-time with a thunderous drive that Krul spilled before gathering at the second attempt.
Krul clawed Maguire’s goal-bound header off the line and tipped Fernandez dipping strike. However, Krul was beaten with two minutes remaining as Pogba’s delivery in from the left caused panic in Norwich defense. The ball eventually dropped to Maguire who converted from six yards.
