Aaron Ramsdale has returned to full training ahead of Arsenal’s crucial Champions League trip to Sevilla
The 25-year-old Aaron Ramsdale sat out of the Gunners’ 2-2 draw at Chelsea on Saturday after his wife, Georgina, gave birth to their first son. Ramsdale had been away with England during the international break but didn’t play against Australia or Italy.
Upon his return to his club side, Ramsdale was absent for the trip to Stamford Bridge. However, he was present in full training on Monday morning as Mikel Arteta’s side prepare for their game against Sevilla at the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan Stadium.
Ramsdale could come back into the XI, though he is facing a battle to regain the No.1 shirt after David Raya cemented his place in the side before the October international matches. Raya has started seven of their last eight matches, including the Gunners’ first two Champions League fixtures.
But Raya has had some difficult moments in recent matches and the Arsenal fans sang Ramsdale’s name in the draw at Chelsea. This was after Raya gifted the Blues a second goal as his poor positioning allowed Mykhaylo Mudryk’s cross to loop over him and into the far corner.
Speaking during co-commentary Gary Neville lamented Raya for his role in Mudryk’s goal.
“His position Raya is not good enough he’s far too far forward that is not good from the Arsenal goalkeeper and that should not end up in the back of the net,” Neville said.
“It’s meant as a cross for Raheem Sterling from Mudryk he doesn’t mean to chip him but the fact he can chip him isn’t right. He’s too far forward there’s no doubt about that. He’s probably a yard too far off his line. He’s beyond the near post it just isn’t right. Why he’s there you’ll have to ask him.”
As for Ramsdale, Arteta has sung his praises after the Arsenal fans showed their love for the goalkeeper. “Great, I love him, I will sing as well for him,” Arteta said. “Every single day we’ve sung a lot for him, [on Friday] because he was a father, the most beautiful thing to do. And he’s someone who has this charisma and personality and is very loved around the team.”
