Reports that Roman Abramovich has reached an agreement with the UK government to hasten Todd Boehly’s takeover of Chelsea and put an end to his ownership of the club are false.

The Russian tycoon and his legal team are said to have reached an agreement on how to manage his £1.5 billion debt, which had been preventing the purchase from being completed. However, according to reports, an agreement with the government has not yet been finalized.

Abramovich has previously declared that he does not want the loan refunded to him. But government officials were purportedly concerned that the 55-year-old will change his mind and demand repayment at a later date.

Despite this, a deal is nearing completion amid fears that Todd Boehly’s £4.25 billion buyouts may fall through before the club’s operational license expires on May 31.

After striking a deal to acquire the club on May 7, Eldridge Industries founder and Los Angeles Dodgers co-owner Boehly will become the majority owner once the acquisition is completed. The consortium’s most powerful member will be the American billionaire, with Clearlake Capital co-founder Behdad Eghbali anticipated to cooperate closely with him and play a key role in financial choices.

Before the Government approves a new license to allow the transaction to proceed, the Premier League must give final approval to Boehly’s consortium through its owners and directors test, as it does with any takeover. The transaction should be approved by the government, as should Abramovich’s intention to transfer the sale earnings to a new philanthropic organization.
