Adam Lyth and Adam Hose both scored fifties for Northern Superchargers as they beat Birmingham Phoenix at Edgbaston.

Adam Lyth scored 56 off 26 balls, including six sixes and nine fours, to “supercharge” the innings, and Hodge remained unbeaten on 53 off 36 balls as Northern Superchargers set the hosts a target of 169 to chase.

David Wiese, who added 34 off 14 and then took three wickets. Birmingham attempted a vain chase as they failed to gain a foothold in the second innings.

It was their second loss of the competition overall and their first at home, while the Supercharged scored a second victory that may have served as an impetus for the remainder of the competition.

An exceptional all-round performance from David Wiese and a quick-fire Adam Lyth half-century helped Northern Superchargers end the Birmingham Phoenix Men’s unbeaten home record in front of a packed home at Edgbaston.

Wiese scored 34 runs in just 14 balls, including four sixes, as the visiting team batted first, reaching a total of 169-6. The Namibia international then claimed an extraordinary figure of 3–15.

Opener Lyth had earlier set a stage for Wiese’s attack with a 26-ball half-century while Adam Hodge added 53 not out.

Phoenix’s chase was made by Will Smed, Moeen Ali, Liam Livingstone and Matthew Wade but all were dismissed cheaply within the first 50 deliveries of their reply.

Efforts from David Wiese and Adam Leith were enough for the Superchargers to become the first visiting men’s team to win at Edgbaston since The Hundred’s inception.

Yorkshireman Adam Leith wasted little time starting. After a quiet opening over bowled by Moeen, the former England Test opener hit Australia seamer Kane Richardson for three consecutive boundaries.

No bowler seemed safe. Livingstone’s first two deliveries were both equally sent for four, while Benny Howell, one of the competition’s form bowlers, was also hit for a six in the Holly’s Stand.

Then things got a little tricky for the Superchargers. Moeen’s return in the attack led to some exploits at Edgbaston. Moeen soon sent Adam Lyth and David Willey to the pavilion.

Dangerous Harry Brooke was dismissed for just three runs thanks to a grab by Imran Tahir at backward point and left the Superchargers 99-5.

However, Hose and Wiese rebuilt strongly, and quickly added 47 runs for the sixth wicket.

Wiese hit four scintillating sixes before falling into Richardson’s net. A late flurry from Hose saw him score a 32-ball fifty in the final set of the Superchargers’ innings, setting his team a 170-run victory target against the Phoenix.

In response, Phoenix openers Smed and Miles Hammond flew off the block to score 44 off 20 balls inside the powerplay. But when Faf du Plessis was dismissed for 15, it headed for a collapse.

First Livingstone fell for five, then Moeen was dismissed after scoring a run. Adil Rashid held Wade back shortly after, and from that point on the outcome felt like a premeditated conclusion.

Two Supercharger bowlers – Wiese and Rashid – ended the day with economy rates under a ball, conceding just two boundaries between them from their 40 balls.
