Former Ireland Cricketer John Mooney Returns to Afghanistan National Team as Fielding Coach

After a gap of six years, former Ireland international cricketer John Mooney has made a comeback to the Afghanistan national team set-up. The Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) announced on Wednesday that Mooney has been appointed as the new fielding coach for the national team.

Mooney previously worked with Afghanistan from 2018 to 2019 and has now returned to take on the role after the departure of Shane McDermott. McDermott, who left to coach the Pakistan national cricket team as a fielding coach, paved the way for Mooney’s return to the Afghan squad.

Impressive International Credentials

With a career that includes representing Ireland in 91 international matches, Mooney brings a wealth of experience to his new role. He has participated in three ICC Cricket World Cups (2007, 2011, and 2015) and two ICC Men’s T20 World Cups. Mooney also holds Level 3, 2, and 1 Coaching Certificates from the England & Wales Cricket Board.

Aside from his stint with Afghanistan, Mooney has also worked with the West Indies team in 2019 and the Ireland women’s team since January of this year. His diverse coaching experience makes him a valuable addition to the Afghan coaching staff.

New Physiotherapist Joins ACB

In addition to Mooney’s appointment, the ACB has welcomed Australian Nirmalan Thanabalasingam as their new physiotherapist. Thanabalasingam’s impressive educational and professional background in physiotherapy and sports science make him a valuable asset to the team.

Having completed his Master of Physiotherapy in 2010 and Bachelor of Applied Science in Exercise and Sports Science in 2008 from the University of Sydney, Thanabalasingam is a registered practitioner with the Physiotherapy Board of Australia and an active member of the Australian Physiotherapy Association (APA).

His expertise lies in treating sports injuries and exercise-based rehabilitation, with experience as the Senior Physiotherapist at Concord Sports Medicine since 2018. Internationally, he has served as the Team Physiotherapist for the Desert Vipers in the International League T20 (ILT20) since 2020.

The Afghanistan national team is currently undergoing a training and preparation camp in Abu Dhabi as they gear up for the upcoming tri-nation T20I series. The series will feature matches against Pakistan and hosts UAE, as well as the ACC Men’s T20I Asia Cup 2025.

With the new additions to their coaching and support staff, Afghanistan is looking to strengthen their team in preparation for the competitive matches ahead. The expertise brought in by Mooney and Thanabalasingam promises to enhance the team’s performance on the field.
