The first Ashes saw a big controversy happen as England’s Pacer Robinson spoke the “F” words to Australian batsman Usman Khawaja after dismissing him in the first innings. Robinson’s act disappointed some former Australian cricketers, as after the match in the conference, while defending his act, he said “Ponting and other Australians did this to us too”. After the English bowler hurled abuse at Khawaja in the first innings, he again had a word with the Australian opener in the second innings as well. However, Robinson’s strategy backfired as Australia chased the target of 281 runs in the fourth inning and took the lead in the five-match Ashes series.
Hayden bashed the English pacer
The incident between Robinson and Khawaja did not go down well with some former Australian cricketers, including Ricky Ponting and Matthew Hayden. After Ponting criticized Robinson for his comments, Hayden also slammed the English bowler. During a chat with former Wicketkeeper Ian Healy, Hayden called Robinson a forgettable cricketer and made a blistering attack on him. When Pat Cummins started hitting runs at Joe Root, Hayden said, “Then another guy, he is a forgettable cricketer, a fast bowler who bowls at 124 kph, faces south, and has got a foul mouth. When Healy asked, “Who, Ollie Robinson?” Hayden responded “Someone like him”.
Allan and Healy were also not impressed by Robinson’s act
Hayden and Ponting were not the only two who bashed Robinson’s tactics. The great Allan Border and Healy themselves were disappointed with the English bowler’s act, which is surprising because the Aussies have never shied away from expressing themselves on the field. In a furious response, Robison said that he doesn’t care about the responses he got for sledging, as these things are bound to happen in high-profile series like The Ashes.
“The wicket was special for me”- Robinson
In an Interview, Ollie Robinson stated, “It was my first Ashes, and it was special for me to get that big wicket at the time. I think Uzzie played brilliantly, it was a big thing for us to get the wicket that time. Everyone wants the amusement of the game, so I am here to provide that. To be honest, I don’t care how it is comprehended. It is Ashes and a professional sport. If you can’t handle this much, then what can you handle?
