The second test of the Ashes series was won by Australia, but it has created a lot of controversy, which has overshadowed the contest displayed by the teams on the field. It all started when Mitchell took a catch of Ben Duckett, but it was dismissed as an improper catch by the third umpire because as soon as Starc took the catch, the ball was rubbed to the grass. Later, Kevin Pietersen’s comments on Nathon Lyon when he came to bat were highlighted, and the one incident that became the most controversial was Bairstow’s dismissal by runout. It was under the rules, but it still angered the English fans and the team as well.

Stokes and Broad showed discontent with the wicket

Stuart Broad, who was on the non-striker end with Bairstow at the time of his dismissal, made a mocking comment on Australia’s wicketkeeper Alex Carey and said that ‘this is all you will be remembered for’. The uproar didn’t stop there, as England skipper Ben Stokes mentioned that Bairstow’s wicket was against the spirit of the game and he would never like to win a match like this. Stokes also said that he would have withdrawn the appeal if he were in that place.

Aakash Chopra slammed England for the hypocrisy

After the incident, many cricket enthusiasts have dug through a number of archive videos that have come to the fore and criticized England for not respecting the spirit of the game on several occasions. Former Cricketer Aakash Chopra has also reacted to one of those videos and pointed out the hypocrisy while taking a dig at Broad and Stokes. Chopra retweeted one of the surfaced videos and wrote, ‘You might as well see the torch bearer of ‘The Spirit of Cricket raising his shoulder rather than withdrawing the appeal. After all, you wouldn’t want to be remembered for all of these. There are several videos circulating exposing the hypocrisy which includes some of the current players’.

The video is from a test match between England and New Zealand, which was played in Headingley. It showed how Jack Leach took the wicket of Henry Nicholls after the ball bounced off Daryl Mitchell’s bat and went straight into the hands of Alex Lees, who was standing at Mid-off. The user who shared the video wrote that if this were England, they would have never accepted the dismissal. Sorry, but that’s not exactly the way England would want to win.
