Allegri was the best option for Real Madrid. Unfortunately Allegri is back in action in Italy.
Search for perfect replacement
Whilst Real Madrid continue their search for a new coach to replace Zinedine Zidane, it’s perhaps wise to take a look at certain analytics for an answer as to who just would be the best successor to the Frenchman, and the early signs are that Massimiliano Allegri was the best candidate.
Allegri has re-joined Juventus after a number of years away from the club, whilst Los Blancos are now looking at other options including Antonio Conte and Mauricio Pochettino. Obviously, it’s impossible to know exactly what Florentino Perez is looking for in his next coach, and whether he wants to continue along the same road as Zidane was doing or try something different.
This experiment has been done on the basis that Los Merengues want a candidate similar in style to Zidane, since it has brought the club such success in recent seasons. We’ve looked at 40 specific metrics that define a team’s style of play, we refer to everything that has to do with a way of defending, and everything that is linked to attacking output.
Di Francesco and Wenger
Taking all this into account, we discarded the 2018/19 season in which Zidane was only in charge for the final two months. In 2017/18, Real Madrid had better attacking statistics because of the presence of Cristiano Ronaldo and the fact it was a more complete squad and their stars were slightly younger. The team most resembled Eusebio Di Francesco’s Roma team in style, and to a lesser extent the Arsenal of Arsene Wenger. It’s worth remembering that it was in that year that Roma eliminated Barcelona in the Champions League and went all the way to the semi-finals.
