Andile Phehlukwayo sustained an injury at The Riverside in Durham on Tuesday, forcing him to miss the rest of the ODI series against England.

Phehlukwayo was fielding in a 62-run victory over his opponents when he collided with Proteas interim skipper Keshav Maharaj.

On the field, he got medical care before rising to his chin and speaking fluently and smiling. The collision looked serious at first sight and emergency medical helps was provided.

His injury replacement Dwaine Pretorius will be part of the team for further matches of the series. He had little success, though, with figures of 0-26 in three overs.

The three-match Twenty20 International series will now commence on Wednesday, and Phehlukwayo will now attempt to stay well. The final two ODIs will be held on Friday and Sunday, respectively.

Proteas team doctor, Dr Hashendra Ramji, explained: “Following his concussion, Andile has been closely monitored and has shown signs of improvement. He will now begin his return to play rehabilitation programme.”

The Proteas are in action on Friday in Manchester, with the last of the ODIs scheduled for Leeds on Sunday.
