Gaekwad’s struggle with cancer had come to light earlier, prompting the BCCI to pledge financial support of INR 1 crore for his treatment. Despite initially receiving treatment in London, he was eventually moved to Vadodara for further care.
Known for his resilience and skill against fast bowlers, Gaekwad was a dependable middle-order batsman during his playing days. His memorable innings of 201 against Pakistan showcased his remarkable concentration and patience, lasting over 11 hours at the crease.
Following his retirement in 1982, Gaekwad transitioned into coaching, leading the Indian national team from 1997 to 1999. While his coaching tenure wasn’t marked by significant success, he was recognized for his contributions with the Col. C. K. Nayudu Lifetime Achievement Award by the BCCI in 2018.
Gaekwad’s legacy in Indian cricket will be remembered for his dedication to the sport both as a player and a coach, leaving a lasting impact on the cricketing community.
