Ally McCoist, a former Rangers striker turned commentator, believes Manchester United should pursue Antonio Conte this summer.

Ally McCoist has said that Manchester United ‘missed the boat’ by failing to appoint Antonio Conte as their new manager prior to the Italian taking over at Tottenham. He has therefore urged the club to lure the Italian away from north London in the summer.

The Red Devils have been linked with a number of Europe’s top managers, with Erik ten Hag of Ajax and Mauricio Pochettino of Paris Saint-Germain apparently in the race to succeed interim leader Ralf Rangnick.

McCoist, on the other hand, feels United should chase Conte and warned that the Italian may be dissatisfied with the Spurs project if he is not backed in the summer. “I believe United lost the boat by failing to appoint Conte at the conclusion of last year, and while under normal conditions that ship would have sailed, nothing surprises you in football,” McCoist said.

“Given the allegations that Mauricio Pochettino wishes to return to Spurs and is uninterested in United, I would not rule out Conte joining United. Conte’s only requirement is financial backing, and I’m not sure he’s satisfied with what he’s getting at Spurs.”

“He has conducted a few unusual interviews and made a few remarks indicating that this is the fact. United have some excellent players, but they are not a great team, and I believe Conte can help them develop into one. It is an opportune time for genuine change.”

McCoist’s views contrast sharply with those of Gary Neville, who is sure that the former Juventus manager cannot offer the Old Trafford club with the longevity and stability it so urgently needs.

“Conte is not a Manchester United manager; he comes in for a year or two and then leaves. Neville made the comments on Sky Sports following United’s 4-1 loss to Manchester City earlier this month. “With Jose Mourinho at the helm, United have been there. They’re interested in appointing [Mauricio] Pochettino or [Erik] Ten Hag to a long-term project.”
