Anya Shrubsole Retires From International Cricket At The Age Of 30
England women’s fast bowler Anya Shrubsole has announced her retirement from international cricket. Shrubsole played a leading role in the victory of the English team in the 2017 World Cup. She was also a part of the team in the final of the recent World Cup, where the English team had to face defeat at the hands of Australia.
Anya Shrubsole, who started her domestic career with Somerset, represented her country in 173 matches across all formats and took 227 wickets. Her best performance with the ball in ODI cricket was against India in the 2017 World Cup final, where she dismissed 6 players for 46 runs. Due to her performance, Team India’s dream of winning the World Cup for the first time remained incomplete.
In a press release issued by the ECB, Anya Shrubsole said, “I feel extremely fortunate to have represented my country for the last 14 years. It has been an honor for me to be involved in the sport at a time of such development in women’s cricket. But it has become very clear to me that the current cricket is progressing faster than me, so it is time to move away from it.”
Anya Shrubsole further said, ‘I never dreamed that I would be able to play for England for so long. If a game is also available for the country, then it is a matter of happiness. There were many ups and downs along the way, but winning the ICC Women’s World Cup at Lord’s in 2017 was special.”
Anya Shrubsole (106 wickets) is the fourth-highest wicket-taker for England in women’s ODIs and is currently the top England wicket-taker (102 wickets) in the T20 format. The 30-year-old has two World Cup and two Ashes titles to her name. Shrubsole may not be seen in the England jersey, but she will continue to play domestic and franchise-based cricket such as the Rachel Flint Trophy, Charlotte Edwards Cup and The Hundred.
