Arsenal Already has Pierre Emerick Aubameyang Replacement
Being made Arsenal captain has been a curse in recent years.
From William Gallas to Granit Xhaka, few skippers have been effective leaders on the pitch for the Gunners whilst many stars, such as Robin van Persie and Thierry Henry have left the club soon after being appointed to the role.
The current club captain is Gabonese international Pierre Emerick Aubameyang, who is one of the most senior players in an incredibly young Arsenal squad.
The 32-year-old isn’t renowned for his leadership qualities. But he is one of the most-liked figures in the Gunners’ dressing room whilst also being their most prolific goal scorer since signing from Borussia Dortmund in January 2018.
However, Aubameyang has less than two years left on his current deal at the Emirates Stadium and isn’t getting any younger. This means a further contract at the Emirates Stadium seems unlikely and the north London club will need to find a new captain whenever front-man does end up departing and they may have an internal solution in their ranks in the form of Martin Odegaard.
The silky playmaker is captain of Norway, a remarkable feat for a 22-year-old who re-joined the Gunners in a permanent deal this summer for around £28million.
And the former Real Madrid midfielder held a team meeting whilst on international duty in an attempt to improve their fortunes.
“We spoke completely freely and openly,” said Odegaard. “Everyone got to air what they had on their minds.
“We have played many big matches in recent years, but have not managed to solve it optimally all the time. We thought it was good to have a chat about how we avoid making new mistakes.
“We have played many important matches where we have subsequently come and said that we should do this and that.
“This time we thought it was okay that we got to air everything in advance. It was not something revolutionary, we really just had a chat.
“It was really about what has happened over several years. At least since I joined the national team, we have not been quite where we should be during big matches. I feel the response after the chat was very good.”
The former Real Sociedad loanee’s demonstration of leadership is exactly what the Gunners’ young squad need given their recent struggles. And it is these traits that could make him the ideal Aubameyang replacement for the armband as and when the time comes.
