Chelsea’s attendance at Stamford Bridge has been down for the first time since owner Roman Abramovich was sanctioned and as a result, the club is unable to sell match tickets.

Because tickets for previous matches had already been sold, the match against Arsenal is the first time the penalty will directly affect a home game. In a stadium with a capacity of 41,837, that means only 25,000 season ticket holders attended Wednesday’s game.

As the contest between the two London rivals got began, the enormous number of vacant seats became apparent.

In the early minutes of the game, Arsenal fans mocked Chelsea’s plight, chanting “there’s nobody here, exactly like the old days, there’s nobody here.”

This season, Chelsea has home games against West Ham United, Wolves, Leicester City, and Watford, which could result in a similar restriction on the number of supporters at Stamford Bridge.

After Abramovich was named among seven oligarchs whose assets were frozen and travel bans were imposed by UK sanctions, the government decided to limit the size of the Chelsea audience.

Because of Abramovich’s ties to the Russian government, the government chose to bar him from doing business with UK persons and businesses.

They have, however, allowed Chelsea to continue, but only under tight terms that prohibit Abramovich from benefitting from the club’s operations.

As a result, the club will be permitted to complete the season as planned, but only a limited number of existing ticket holders, including season ticket holders, will be permitted to attend games.

When the takeover is complete, the club should be able to sell tickets as usual.

Paul Canoville, a former Chelsea player, expressed his dissatisfaction with the fact that Chelsea must play in front of a smaller crowd at Stamford Bridge.

‘Tonight will see a significant swath of Chelsea members seats unoccupied while Arsenal has been allowed to fill out the away section,’ Canoville wrote on Twitter.

‘Ex-players are unable to purchase our two allotted tickets. @NadineDorries @nigelhuddleston @GregHands These will go to my Foundation to help our efforts. #Chelsea, this is absurd.’

‘Everyone has the right to be foolish, but you’re exploiting it as a luxury,’ he said below the post.
