Ashes 2021-2022, 5th Test, Day 1

Travis Head who scored gleaming 152 in the opening test at Brisbane ruined England’s success with a power-pack 101 runs off 113 balls in the ongoing day & night Hobart test. Further Cameron Green’s 74 & Marnus Labuschagne’s 44 helped Australia to reach a competitive 241-6 before rain played a spoilsport & resulted in the abrupt abandonment of the third session on day one of the fifth Ashes Test.

England was off to a flying start on day one of the fifth Ashes test in Hobart but soon Travis Head’s century got Australia back into the game. Derailing at 12/3, Head’s ton guided Australia to reach 241-6 at stumps on a rain-hit first day. Travis Head steadied Australia’s submerging innings after Ollie Robinson (2-24) & Stuart Broad (2-48) created havoc by dismantling Australia’s top order.

Travis Head who missed the Sydney Test due to COVID-19 put their innings back on track by stitching a 71 run stand with labuschagne. England dropped Labuschagne’s catch at second slip which proved costly for them as Labuschagne headed strong & added quickfire 44 runs to their scoreboard. Marnus Labuschagne smashed Chris Woakes & Mark Wood for nine boundaries before getting dismissed in a weird fashion before the end of the first session.

Head and Green continue to excel with the bat

Labuschagne was clean bowled in an unusual style when he appeared to slip in the crease and Broad had the middle stump knocked back with the batsman falling over on his knees while going way across his stumps. However after Labuschagne’s dismissal, Head & Green continue to excel with the bat against Woakes & Wood’s fiery pace attack & successfully yielded 130 runs in the middle session.

Travis Head played exclusive shots & hammered 12 boundaries before bringing up his century by scoring two runs off Woakes delivery. After registering a ton, Travis Head got dismissed by handing a gentle catch on mid-wicket. Similarly, Cameron Green got trapped on Wood’s short delivery after hitting a pull shot which landed perfectly in Zak Crawley’s hand who was stationed at deep mid-wicket.

Earlier in the first session, England won the toss & opted to bowl first. Robinson & Broad together made the most of favourable conditions at Hobart to put Australia in trouble. Broad troubled openers David Warner and Usman Khawaja. He removed David Warner for a golden duck & got better of Khawaja for six runs. Further Ollie Robinson removed Steve Smith for 0 to leave Australia reeling at 12-3 right in the first innings within the first 10 overs.

England made a couple of changes to their playing XI with Jonny Bairstow & Jos Buttler being ruled out of the fifth Ashes test due to a thumb injury & broken finger. England also excluded out- form Haseeb Hameed from the Playing XI with Jimmy Anderson and Jack Leach not finding a place in the final Ashes squad.
