A harmless challenge from Nikola Vlasic resulted in Ashley Westwood facing lengthy medical treatment before leaving on a stretcher.

What happened?

The Croatian West Ham footballer was reduced to tears during West Ham PL’s clash with Burnley after his innocuous challenge to Westwood left the Clarets star in need of long-term treatment for a horror injury. The incident in question occurred 22 minutes later in an overhead flight at the London Stadium and left those on the pitch visibly upset. Ashley, who now has a long road to recovery, was forced to leave the serve on a stretcher as Nikola had to be consoled by players from both sides before the two teams drew 1-1.

Ashley picked up a loose ball in the middle of the park, but saw how a heavy touch gave Nikola Vlasic a chance to steal possession from him. The Burnley player stuck out his foot to jab the ball wide, but was slammed by a backwards-reaching hammers forward, which meant no harm. Ashley’s right leg got stuck under him as he carried the brunt of Nikola’s weight as the Croat knocked his opponent down.

It was immediately clear that something serious had happened, they waved to the medical staff on the field. After 10 minutes of treatment, Ashley walked away to a standing ovation from both groups of supporters. Nikola knelt down as the severity of the injury dawned on everyone present, and Captain Hammers was among those who offered words of comfort to a colleague in pain of his own.

What did the manager say?

Burnley interim manager Mike Jackson told reporters at the end of the 1-1 draw, when asked about the news about Ashley Westwood, that he was in the hospital and they were waiting for an update. They hope Ashley is ok – their thoughts are with him. They saw that it was not good by the reaction of the players. Ashley Westwood looked distraught, but his fingers were crossed.

“When you see Declan Rice come in and say it’s not good, you know it’s not. The guy raised his hand and usually doesn’t come down,” said Mike Jackson. According to Mike it may be the end of his season, but there is a squad here ready to play. Josh Brownhill came in and did really well.
