India started their two-match Test series against West Indies on a high note as off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin’s superb five-wicket haul helped bundle out the hosts for a meager total of 150 runs on the opening day of the first Test at Windsor Park in Roseau.

With a dominant performance by India’s spinners, the team is now well-positioned to secure a significant first-innings lead. Ashwin, who claimed his 33rd five-wicket haul in Test cricket, was the standout performer, finishing with impressive figures of 5-60.

He capitalized on a slow pitch and used his experience and skill to bamboozle the West Indies batsmen. Reflecting on his outstanding performance, Ashwin modestly described it as a “pretty good performance,” acknowledging the favorable conditions that assisted him.

The decision to bat first after winning the toss backfired for West Indies as their batsmen struggled against India’s spin attack. The team’s skipper, Kraigg Brathwaite, was left to rue his decision as the entire batting lineup collapsed, with only Alick Athanaze (47) showing some resistance before being denied a well-deserved fifty by Ashwin.

Supporting Ashwin’s heroics was left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja, who claimed three crucial wickets. He dismissed Jermaine Blackwood, Joshua Da Silva, and Kemar Roach to further dent West Indies’ batting order. With the spin duo wreaking havoc, India successfully seized control of the game.

Following the dismissal of the West Indies team, India commenced their reply with a solid opening partnership between captain Rohit Sharma and debutant Yashasvi Jaiswal. The pair demonstrated their composure and skill as they steadily built a partnership of 80 runs without losing a wicket.

While Rohit contributed 30 runs at stumps, the highlight of the Indian innings was the performance of Jaiswal. The 21-year-old left-hander displayed maturity beyond his years, scoring an unbeaten 40 runs by the end of the day’s play. Jaiswal’s debut innings showcased his talent and potential, leaving fans and teammates impressed.

Speaking about Jaiswal’s performance, Ashwin praised the young opener, highlighting his fearless and vibrant approach to batting. Jaiswal’s ability to execute unconventional shots, such as a reverse sweep on the first ball of the last over, reflects his confidence and promises a bright future for the youngster.

As India heads into the second day of the Test match, they have a firm grip on proceedings. With a considerable first-innings lead within reach, the team will look to consolidate their position and extend their advantage. The spinners will continue to play a crucial role on a pitch that is expected to offer even more assistance as the match progresses.
