Atletico Madrid loses first game in La Liga this season
Atletico Madrid could not do anything against Alaves. Keep in mind that Atletico Madrid made few come-backs this season but at this moment, they were not better than Alaves.
Atletico could make a come-back
Atletico Madrid looked blunt and unorganised as an impressive Alaves got their first points of the season with a 1-0 win at the Estadio Mendizorroza. Los Colchoneros therefore missed the chance to go top, even if they could’ve just been temporarily, with LaLiga Santander leaders Real Madrid playing on Saturday night at home to Villarreal. The visitors never really got going in Vitoria-Gasteiz and the home side were 1-0 winners, although both sides only had one shot on target each. Alaves captain Victor Laguardia powered home a header from a corner in the fourth minute and Atletico had no real answer for the rest of the game. Indeed, it was Alaves who looked more dangerous on the counter and could have put the game beyond doubt.
The coach of Atletico was not impressed
Diego Simeone won’t be impressed by Atletico’s performance and even less so to have conceded from a set piece, while offering no threat with their own set pieces. Not so long ago, this was an area of the game in which Atleti were true masters. Los Rojiblancos were completely out of sorts on Saturday and even the simple things seemed out of their reach. Despite Atletico pinning Alaves back, the Basque side came under no real threat. For the Glorioso the points, their first of the campaign, are very welcome after five straight defeats. Javi Calleja’s men are now on their way up the table and will hope to build on this when they visit San Mames on Friday. For Atleti, the coming week will be a big test with a visit to the Stadio San Siro preceding hosting Barcelona next weekend. It will be tough for Diego to play against Barca although it will be home-game.
