The ICC inspection panel has inspected the Bengaluru pitch which was used in the second test match between India and Sri Lanka.

As a result, the M Chinnaswamy Stadium has been termed as below average, which was used in the second test match between India and Sri Lanka. The M Chinnaswamy Stadium pitch has received one demerit point.

According to the ICC press release, Javagal Srinath said, ‘The pitch started turning too much on the first day itself. However, it improves with each session but in the end, it wasn’t equal competition between bat and ball.”

The ICC’s revised pitch and outfield monitoring process was introduced on 4 January 2018. According to this, if a pitch or outfield is declared as poor, then a number of demerit points will be allotted to that place. One demerit point will be awarded to places whose pitches are rated as below average by the match referee.

At the same time, three and five demerit points will be given to those places whose pitches have been marked as poor and unfit respectively. When the outfield is rated as below average no demerit points will be given, but two and five demerit points will be given to places whose outfield is marked as poor and unfit respectively. The period of demerit marks remains active for five years.

When a ground accumulates (or exceeds) five demerit points, it is suspended from hosting any international cricket for a period of 12 months. At the same time, a venue will be suspended from any international cricket event for 24 months when it reaches the limit of 10 demerit points.

The bowlers were dominating on the first day of the Day-Night Test held in Bangalore. A total of 16 wickets fell on the first day, out of which nine spinners took it. Sri Lanka scored 86/6 after bowling India out for 252 at the end of the first day. Then at the beginning of the second day, the Sri Lankan team was all out for 109 runs.

Later India set a target of 447 runs in front of Sri Lanka. The visiting team did better in the final innings, with Dimuth Karunaratne scoring a brilliant century.

However, the Sri Lankan team lost the match by 238 runs. With this victory, India had clean sweeped Sri Lanka 2-0 and reached number-4 in the World Test Championship rankings.
