Eric Abidal’s contract terminated by Barcelona
Barcelona have announced the termination of their contract with technical manager Eric Abidal. As they continue to clean the back rows of the club. The Catalan club announced the firing of head coach Quique Setien on Monday following a dreadful end to the 2019-20 season, losing the LaLiga title to eternal rivals Real Madrid and crashing from the Champions League in a dramatic fashion. The 8-2 push at the hands of Bayern Munich in the quarterfinals was the final straw for Setien. He was brought in to reclaim the exciting football brand that had vanished under the more pragmatic Ernesto Valverde. Abidal’s last act as technical manager showed Setien the exit door at Camp Nou.
The French ex-full-back had found himself in the bad books of club captain Lionel Messi after publicly criticizing players for “not doing a lot of work” after Valverde had been sacked at the turn of the year.
Abidal’s departure may please Messi
Messi publicly called on Abidal to “name names” for players he considered underdeveloped. He added that his former team-mate’s statement would wash away the entire squad. Including the Argentine – if he didn’t get specific. Now the skipper no longer have to attend to the opinion of Abidal. The French technical manager’s contract terminated by the club on Tuesday. A statement on Barça’s official website reads: “FC Barcelona and Eric Abidal have reached an agreement to terminate the contract binding on both sides”. The club publicly expresses its gratitude to Eric Abidal for his professionalism, commitment, dedication. A positive and close attitude towards all areas that make up the Barça family, and wishes him the best in the future.”
While Abidal’s departure may please Messi to some extent, many believe in requiring a full backroom restructuring at the club. Starting with president Josep Maria Bartomeu, whose time in the leadership was fraught with negative headlines. A slew of disastrous transfers have fans calling for the supremo’s head. But the man himself indicated that he would not face the presidential elections in March 2021.
