Xavi has big plans for the summer of 2022 – he wants Barça to be strengthened by as many as eight newcomers. It looks very nice, but the reality is much stricter due to financial constraints – the Catalans are only gradually improving the intra-club economy, there are still plenty of problems.

Who does Xavi want to see so much?

AC Milan midfielder Franck Kessie, Chelsea defenders Andreas Christensen, Cesar Azpilicueta and Marcos Alonso, Bayern star Robert Lewandowski, Leeds winger Rafinha, Sevilla defender Jules Kunde and Man City’s Bernardo Silva.

What about the contracts of these players and the chances of being at Barcelona?

Some are really close to moving.

  • Rumor has it that Barcelona have already reached an agreement with Frank Kessie and Andreas Christensen to come as free agents. True, the difficulty is in registration: according to Diario Sport, Barcelona needs to show an increase in income in order to get approval for new players from the regulatory authorities.

By the way, the Catalans faced similar problems in the winter. Then Barça could not register Ferran Torres, who moved from Man City, for a long time. But he, like the other three newcomers, still managed to be included in the application – the unloading of the salary sheet helped: Coutinho’s departure, the sad parting with Aguero and the reduced requests of Aubameyang with Dani Alves.

With other players that Xavi wants, it’s more difficult.

  • Cesar Azpilicueta and Marcos Alonso have another year each on their Chelsea contracts. The reliable Fabrizio Romano wrote that both wanted to return to Spain, but negotiations with the London club were still ahead. Unpredictable.
  • Robert Lewandowski is also on a year-long contract, although he is already openly demanding a transfer  from Bayern. The Munich people are not happy and do not seek to give away the main star. According to Diario Sport, even if Barca finds an opportunity to offer 30 million euros plus bonuses, the German club will not part with the Pole just like that: it is important for them to at least sign a replacement –  they are ready to let go only if they sign Mane and Kalajdzic to attack.
  • Chelsea have a close eye on Kunde, but Barça are close by. True, Sevilla asks for almost 70 million euros for him – only 23 years old, top form and a contract until 2024 allow him to inflate the price. Such an expensive purchase for the Catalans now is unbearable.
  • According to insider Gerard Moreno, Bernardo Silva would like to play for Barça, but everything will depend on the economic situation. The transition also looks unrealistic.
  • Rafinha’s price will not fall after Leeds retain their place in the Premier League: Leeds are demanding a minimum of €55m (Fabrizio Romano), so the Brazilian is less likely to join the club.

Total: out of eight, Xavi can really count on a maximum of three – Lewandowski (due to the Pole’s keen desire to move and unwillingness to stay at Bayern), Kessie and Christensen (due to their free agent status).

How are Barcelona going to sign anyone?

Vice-President Eduardo Romeu outlined the main directions for improving the economy: the club plans to cut salaries and sign another lucrative partnership contract. “The payroll this season is 560 million euros, which is 260 million more than Bayern and 160 more than Real Madrid. We will be negotiating individual wage cuts with players. In addition, we have a €270 million offer for Barça Licensing & Merchandising (the club is ready to sell 49.9% to its subsidiary, which is engaged in brand monetization), but we want more. The club is working to increase revenue and reduce costs, please be patient. It takes 2 to 5 years to recover,” Romeu said. In addition, Barcelona has options to get another 540 million euros: half of the amount – as an interest-free loan upon ratification of the La Liga deal with the CVC investment fund (initially, the club was against it, because according to the terms, the fund would then take 8, 2% of profits from the sale of media rights), the same amount – by agreement with Goldman Sachs, its details are still unknown.
