Neymar is not in Font’s plans

Barcelona presidential candidate Victor Font has no purpose of trying to re-sign Neymar from Paris Saint-Germain if he wins the elections. Neymar spent four trophy seasons at Camp Nou before joining the French giants for a record €222 million in August 2017. Since then, he has been embroiled in a legal battle with his former club over alleged breach of contract and unpaid loyalty payments. Amid fresh rumours last week linking Neymar to a return to Catalunya, Font ruled out an approach for the 28-year-old. “Institutionally, Neymar is not in my plans,” said Font. He has previously stated that he wants to bring Pep Guardiola back to Barcelona. He wants to reunite the Catalan manager with Lionel Messi.

“For financial reasons and for other reasons like a lawsuit against the club. And the fact that he left the club in a difficult situation a few days before the start of the 2017 season.”

“Neymar would fit in on the sporting side. But not the financial or institutional side of things,” Font added in an interview. “But the signatures will be in the hands of the sporting directorate, not the way they have been made up so far”. Barcelona has been without an official president since Josep Maria Bartomeu resigned in late October ahead of an expected vote of no confidence. Victor Font is the heavy favourite to win the January 24 election. He may have several issues to address if he is going to take control of power at Camp Nou. At the same time, Messi – who is only connected with a contract until the summer of 2021 – may talk with suitors outside LaLiga by the moment Barça get their new president in place.
