Manchester United being determined to land the Netherlands international. The Red Devils are offering 60 million euros plus 20m euros in bonuses in their bid to acquire De Jong’s services.

Barca haven’t managed to strengthen their squad yet

Financial struggles are preventing Barcelona from making progress in their sporting planning for next season, as the Blaugrana haven’t managed to strengthen their squad yet. To do so, they need to finalise the deals to sell part of their TV rights and Barca Licensing Merchandising, as well as cashing in on a player to make space in their salary cap. For this reason, Barcelona seem to be willing to offload Frenkie de Jong, with Manchester United being determined to land the Netherlands international. The Red Devils are offering 60 million euros plus 20m euros in bonuses in their bid to acquire De Jong’s services. Barcelona don’t believe that they will get a similar offer for a player this summer.

De Jong’s sale will become the second most expensive transfer in Barcelona’s history after that of Neymar

Barcelona think that the offer it too good to turn down, as their financial situation does not allow them to reject massive cash injections even though Xavi Hernandez is pleased with De Jong’s performances and professionalism. The Dutchman, who is one of the highest-paid players in the squad, has been reluctant to leave Catalonia as his dream was to play for the Blaugrana, where he believes that he can improve under Xavi. Yet, Manchester United’s insistence, Erik ten Hag’s interest in him and the pressure that Barcelona could put on their player could make him change his mind. Should Barcelona clinch a deal to sell De Jong to Manchester United, his sale will become the second most expensive transfer in the club’s history after that of Neymar. The Brazilian forward had departed the club for Paris Saint-Germain, who triggered his 222m euro release clause in 2017.

Barcelona offloaded Arthur to Juventus in exchange for 72m euros plus 10m euros in variables. Still, Miralem Pjanic was included in the deal as a makeweight, which means that the club made 12m euros plus five in bonuses. In the past, Luis Figo had joined Real Madrid for 60m euros, while Paulinho departed Barcelona for 50m euros. De Jong arrived at the Camp Nou in the summer of 2019 in exchange for 75m euros plus another 11m in variables. After scoring two goals and registering four assists in 42 games in 2019/20, he played 51 games, scoring seven and assisting eight goals the next season. The last term, he participated in 47 games, netting four times and recording five assists.
