A new long-term contract for 17-year-old wunderkind

Barcelona are about to start negotiations with teenage sensation Ansu Fati for a new long-term contract. The 17-year-old wunderkind made headlines again last week. He became Spain’s youngest debutant since 1936 against Germany, before scoring in his first-ever start against Ukraine to become the country’s youngest-ever scorer. Negotiations for a new contract for Fati would likely have already begun if it weren’t for the saga of the future of Lionel Messi. With the Guinea-Bissau striker’s current deal set to expire in June 2022. Sources within Fati’s camp told reporters that the player wants to stay at Barcelona. But he wants reassurances that he will move to regular first-team football. He enjoys his recent accomplishments and wants to ensure that he can capitalize on these moments to keep his career moving forward.

Ansu Fati’s records

Fati’s contract will be negotiated by super-agent Jorge Mendes. He has been booked to meet with Barcelona over the next few days. It is understood that Barcelona wants to increase the current exemption clause of €170 million to €400m in a new contract proposal. Fati has earned comparisons to Messi after his meteoric rise over the past 12 months from La Masia’s talent to potential superstar. He became the second-youngest Barça debutant in history – aged 16, 298 days – against Real Betis last August. Before becoming the club’s youngest goalscorer in history just six days after his first appearance. Shortly after his 17th birthday, Ansu Fati became the youngest goalscorer in UEFA Champions League history. With his winner against Inter in a 2-1 victory in December.

His debut season with the senior Barça team saw the talented striker score eight goals and create one assist in 33 appearances across all competitions. However, 18 of these appearances were as replacements as the teen was gradually introduced to the first team. “I will continue to work, and the coach is the one who decides,” Fati said. “I will train hard. If I get the chance, I will try to take advantage of it.”
