Pique, Alba and Busquets are waiting for pay cuts

Barcelona are trying to make the numbers work so they are able to be active in this summer’s transfer market, and one of their strategies to do so is to negotiate salary cuts with three veteran players: Gerard Pique, Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets. Those players will be owed a total of almost 100 million throughout next season through a combination of salaries, delayed payments and bonuses. For the Blaugrana board, reducing that figure is a priority. If they cannot cut costs while also increasing revenue, the Catalan club won’t be able to make many moves in the transfer window without falling foul of financial fair play rules. As much as players like Erling Haaland and Robert Lewandowski have been mentioned in the media, the truth is the club, as things stand, cannot contemplate any significant arrivals.

The three players will be asked to cut their base salary to free up the club’s wage budget

Barcelona president Joan Laporta is working on several deals that could solve the problem, but none have been sealed yet. Even if or when the deals with CVC and BLM and the partial sale of Barca Studios go ahead, it won’t be enough, hence the urgency of speaking to Pique, Alba and Busquets. Getting the players to cut their salaries will be no easy task for sporting director Mateu Alemany. The three players in question have already agreed to delay payments owed to them until later in their contracts and have also waived their rights to certain bonus payments, but this is the first time that they will be asked to cut their base salary to free up the club’s wage budget.

Pulling that off isn’t simple for many reasons, but one possible solution can be seen in the example of defender Samuel Umtiti. The Frenchman agreed to renew his contract in the last transfer window, spreading out what would have been owed to him in 18 months over three years. It was a good deal for the club as it gave them the flexibility to bring in several players. This method could work in Busquets’ case as the midfielder’s current deal expires in 2023, so he could agree to extend his contract and receive the money that would be owed to him next season over several years instead.

It’s not as simple as that with Pique, whose contract runs until 2024 when he will already be 37, while Alba is in a similar boat as he will be 35 when his deal runs out in the same year. Tough decisions are ahead for Barcelona and their captains.
