Bayern Munich will step up their pursuit of Harry Kane with two of their top executives expected in London.
The future of the England international has progressed into somewhat of a saga with there remaining no certainty over where he will play his football during 2023-24.
Kane is said to have no intention of penning fresh terms at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in the foreseeable future. This has left Spurs at risk of losing their most prized asset on a free transfer.
Up until a few days ago, it was frequently claimed that Spurs chairman Daniel Levy had no plans to cash in on the player and was prepared to see him depart for nothing.
However, a report has now indicated that Spurs owner Joe Lewis wants to sell Kane if he does not sign a new deal, effectively forcing Levy to rethink his stance.
For a number of weeks, Bayern Munich have made little progress in any discussions with Levy, the Bundesliga champions having two official bids – the second in the region of £68m – rejected for Kane’s signature.
Nevertheless, there has been talk of a third offer being tabled in the coming days, one which may theoretically result in Levy having to consider somewhat of a compromise.
Bayern are growing optimistic that they will eventually make the breakthrough with their Spurs counterparts.
Chief executive Jan-Christian Dreesen and technical director Marco Neppe are set for talks with Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy, who is back from the team’s tour of Australia and South East Asia.
The German champions are increasingly confident of sealing a deal for Kane, who is in the final year of his Spurs contract.
They will have to improve their last offer, which was close to £70million, but the feeling is that Spurs are shifting towards a fee they will accept.
Levy has been told by Joe Lewis, the billionaire in control of the Tottenham empire and facing jail in the US on charges of insider trading, to sell Kane now rather than risk losing him for nothing next year.
Paris Saint-Germain are also interested but Kane, who turns 30 on Friday, is thought to have set his heart on Bavaria if he leaves this summer.
It may cost him the chance to pass Alan Shearer’s Premier League goals record. But Bayern can satisfy his desire to challenge for trophies and play in the Champions League every year.
Kane is currently playing a full part of Spurs’ pre-season, with the all-time record goalscorer in line to feature against Singapore’s Lion City Sailors on Wednesday.
