Martinez will retire this summer
Bayern Munich confirm that Javi Martinez will retire from his trophy-laden nine-year career at Allianz Arena this summer. The centre-back will leave Allianz Arena at the end of the current campaign by mutual agreement, with both sides having decided against a contract renewal. Javi will be available for Bayern’s final three Bundesliga matches against Gladbach, Freiburg and Wolfsburg. “I am very proud and happy to be part of the Bayern family for nine years,” said the Spain midfielder. “I would like to thank this great club and especially our fans – you have made Munich my home and I will never forget these nine years. From the very first day, I felt the special nature of Bayern Munich. I lived for this club, I always gave everything for it, and I am delighted with many titles that we won together.”
The midfielder would be guaranteed a place in Bayern’s hall of fame
“The Bavarians and their fans will forever be in my heart; see you again!” Bayern president Herbert Hainer insisted that Martinez would be guaranteed a place in the club’s hall of fame for everything he did at Allianz Arena, wishing him well for the future. “Javi Martinez is one of those players who make it clear what Bayern stands for,” said Hainer. “When the best international players identify with our team, the way he does, you can achieve big things. Martinez quickly became one of us, and the incredible success that we enjoyed with him speaks for itself. Javi Martinez will always be in the history of Bayern. We wish him all the best in his life.” Bayern Munich CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge added: “Javi gave our team great quality in terms of play and has always been a great personal fit.”
“Let me thank Javi for a delightful and successful time. Take care of yourself, Javi. You will always be an important part of the FC Bayern family.” Martinez joined Bayern from Athletic Bilbao for a record fee of €40 million in 2012 and has since appeared in 266 games in all competitions for the German champions.
