Due to the physical and mental strains of the international calendar, Ben Stokes has declared that he will end his career in one-day international cricket soon after England plays South Africa at Chester-le-Street on Tuesday.

Stokes stated playing three formats was “unsettling for me right now” and that he felt he was stifling possibilities for other players when he was named England’s Test captain earlier this year.

He was meant to relax during his T20I obligations against India and South Africa as well as the Hundred and play all six ODIs for England this summer.

Back to back games can derail a player’s fitness and exhaust his ability to read the situation. This has been the case with Ben Stokes who struggled with bat and ball in white ball cricket after 4 back to back test matches in English conditions.

Fans have reacted with surprise to his retirement as he English test cricket returned back to the glorious days under his captaincy, registering back to back 4 test matches victory.

In an instgram post sharing news of his untimely retirement from ODI cricket, Ben Stokes said:

“I can’t give my team-mates 100% of myself in this format anymore,” Stokes said in a statement.

“This has been an incredibly tough decision to make. I have loved every minute of playing with my mates for England. We have had an incredible journey on the way.

“As hard as a decision as this was to come to, it’s not as hard dealing with the fact I can’t give my teammates 100% of myself in this format anymore. The England shirt deserves nothing less from anyone who wears it.

“Three formats are just unsustainable for me now. Not only do I feel that my body is letting me down because of the schedule and what is expected of us, but I also feel that I am taking the place of another player who can give Jos and the rest of the team their all. It’s time for someone else to progress as a cricketer and make incredible memories like I have over the past 11 years.”
