Borussia Dortmund will wait until after the Champions League final against Real Madrid to make a move for Mason Greenwood

Greenwood spent the 2023/24 season on loan with Getafe. United are now hoping to seal a permanent move in the summer transfer window. The 22-year-old made an impression at Getafe, contributing 10 goals and six assists in 36 appearances across all competitions and there has been plenty of interest in his services.

Getafe have made it clear they would like to keep Greenwood for another season on loan. However, that possibility isn’t realistic, with major European sides ready to pay a significant transfer fee. Juventus, Atletico Madrid and Napoli have been credited with interest, along with Barcelona, and Dortmund recently entered the fray.

The German giants have benefited from taking United winger Jadon Sancho on loan for the second half of the campaign. Hence they believe Greenwood could represent a similar deal, with just one year left on his contract.

According to reports, Dortmund would prefer to land Greenwood on loan if possible. However, sporting director Sebastian Kehl refused to elaborate when speaking to the media on Tuesday ahead of their clash with Real Madrid in the Champions League final this weekend.

“I don’t want to talk about any rumours now at the moment because it makes no sense”. He said.

“Let’s play that final on Saturday. Of course we do have our plans for the next season and of course we discuss many scenarios, but nothing for today. Let’s focus, let’s anticipate that match on Saturday and then we’ll see how we move on.”

When asked if Greenwood is a player that Dortmund admire, Kehl said: “I don’t want to talk about that now.” United will explore all options for Greenwood and, ideally, would like to fetch a fee close to £40million.

The club decided to loan out Greenwood last summer following an internal review into his situation. Greenwood was arrested in October 2022 and was subsequently charged with attempted rape, engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm. Those charges were dropped in February 2023 by the Crown Prosecution Service, but United decided he wouldn’t play another game for the club.

The young striker was loaned to Getafe. He has rekindled his career and was recently named the Spanish side’s player of the season. “It feels amazing to win this kind of award but I wouldn’t be able to get this kind of achievement if it wasn’t for my team-mates and the coaching staff”. He said.

“Everyone’s done well in helping me get this award and I just want to say thank you to my teammates and the coaching staff.”

Posting on social media after the conclusion of the season, Greenwood wrote, “Incredibly grateful to the Getafe family and fans for an amazing season. Thank you for making me feel welcome and one of your own. I enjoyed every second, alongside my team-mates and club. A bitter-sweet ending, but it was a pleasure to play for you, I wish you all the best.”
