Christian Eriksen was booed by Brentford fans during Manchester United’s visit to west London, as he faced his former club for the first time since leaving the Bees for Old Trafford.
After deciding not to prolong his spell at the Brentford Community Stadium, the Dane, Christian Eriksen, became United’s second new acquisition under manager Erik ten Hag, signing a three-year contract at Old Trafford.
And the home crowd made their feelings plain to the midfielder during their Premier League meeting, booing him throughout. Eriksen was caught asleep by Mathias Jensen, who made no mistake in reaching the back of the net for Brentford’s second goal.
The 30-year-old could only watch as Josh Dasilva, Ben Mee, and Bryan Mbuemo all scored to give the home team a 4-0 advantage at the break. As Brentford surged into a four-goal lead in the first 45 minutes, home fans could be heard singing: ‘Christian, what’s the score?’
Eriksen spent the 2021-22 season with the London club in his return to Premier League football after suffering a heart episode while playing for Denmark at Euro 2020. He had four assists and one goal in the Premier League and was one of their most important assets in helping Thomas Frank’s side secure their position in the top division.
Despite his success at Brentford, Eriksen chose to join United in the summer as part of Ten Hag’s new phase as manager.
‘Manchester United is a wonderful club, and I cannot wait to get started,’ he said on the club’s website. I’ve had the opportunity of playing at Old Trafford numerous times, but doing so in the red shirt of Manchester United will be an incredible sensation.’
