The Ashes series between England and Australia always becomes an unforgettable event, not only because of the cricket played but also because of the publicity that surrounds it. Players, media personalities, and fan pages get involved in the game too. In the Ashes, we always get to see Cricket’s fiercest and longest-standing rivalries battle both on and off the field. This year we saw the same thing as English Bowler Ollie Robinson’s sledge show during the first test made headlines. Although England lost the first test, they remained in good spirits and also took the opportunity to joke and battle wits against Australian media and social media pages.
Robinson termed as Villain by Australian Media
During the first innings, when Robison dismissed Centurion Usman Khawaja he gave the Aussie batsman an expletive-laden farewell and afterward he defended it at a press conference, which triggered the war of words between Australian media and Robinson. The English bowler received several jokes after he said that Australia had three No. 11s and only No. 10 (Nathon Lyon) played a key role in completing the target chase in Birmingham. After such a war of words, the second test at Lord’s will definitely be a blazing one. Australian Sports channel Fox Cricket also took its Twitter handle and labelled Robinson as “the number one Villain” , but Robinson’s teammate and Veteran English bowler Stuart Broad didn’t stand it and gave Fox Cricket a sarcastic reply.
Broad’s humorous response
In response to their tweet, Broad wrote, “No. 1 Villain? I can’t lose that tag already, Can I? This is disappointing. Broad played a crucial role during the first Ashes test and took important wickets, acting as a thorn for the opposition. His bowling had a good effect, which kept England in the game. The very first Ashes game Broad played was in July 2009, and since then he has had several minor battles with Australia. He has 137 wickets against them, and since the 2019 Ashes, he has dismissed opener David Warner seven times in 10 innings.
Broad can play a key role in next test
In the next test at Lord’s, Broad can play the role of a Villain against Australia and add more zeal to England’s game. This could be the key role for their team, and they can make a comeback in the series. Despite the criticism levelled at Robinson, he took five wickets in the first test, while Broad took six wickets. James Anderson’s performance was not up to par, but he will be looking forward to the next game and making a comeback as the attacking leader.
