Bayer Leverkusen vs FC Koln

The last three of those home games saw Leverkusen lead at half-time, score in both halves, and register a handicap-beating win.

Bayer Leverkusen

The second place remains possible for Bayer Leverkusen, but a poor run of four-game form which includes a 3-2 defeat at Atalanta in European midweek action is threatening to derail what has been a good season so far. Bizarrely, they’ve now lost the last two games in which they netted the opener, but if there’s a place to bounce back and regain confidence then surely it’s at the BayArena, where Leverkusen are unbeaten since the beginning of November. The last three of those home games saw Leverkusen lead at half-time, score in both halves, and register a handicap-beating win. Yet while that all sounds promising, the home side will start this game without top scorer Patrik Schick due to injury. That’s important as Leverkusen’s win rate this season without Schick has been a disappointing 33 per cent, compared to 58 per cent when he’s featured.

FC Koln

For a side that survived via the relegation playoff spot last season, Cologne can also claim a successful campaign so far. Although they have identical recent four-game form as opponents Leverkusen, the ‘Billy Goats’ sit safe in mid-table and could even make a push for Europe if they end the season strongly, starting by going one better than the reserve fixture result (2-2). That 2-2 H2H draw saw Cologne make lethal use of crosses into the box, and since then Cologne haven’t slowed down in that respect having scored a league-high 14 goals from crosses into the box ahead of this round. Yet with their previous seven away games witnessing both teams score, Cologne’s crossing danger could yet again be cancelled out by their defence which is yet to record a Bundesliga away clean sheet this season.

Moussa Diaby has scored an impressive six goals across Leverkusen’s last three home games and has netted in two straight home H2Hs too. Meanwhile, Cologne’s Anthony Modeste has scored before half-time in three of his last four away appearances. Ahead of this round no side has registered more yellow cards than Leverkusen’s 55 (2.2 on average per match).
