RB Leipzig

It’s a second meeting in a matter of days for RB Leipzig and Union Berlin after the two sides clashed on Wednesday night in the DFB Pokal. Leipzig came out on top (2-1), continuing an impressive record of losing only one of their 20 competitive matches in 2022 so far! Despite that form they’re unlikely to catch Borussia Dortmund in second but are still very much on course to secure a fourth consecutive top-three Bundesliga finish. The hosts have conceded just once across their last four league matches, which sheds some light on why only Bayern Munich can boast a better defensive record this season (31). That record could well be tested here though given that Union broke the deadlock against them on Wednesday night, and the fact Leipzig lost 2-1 in the last two league H2H meetings.

Union Berlin

Trying to hold off the chasing pack, the sixth-placed Union can’t afford to let Wednesday’s cup defeat derail their own impressive form in the league where they’ve won their last three matches – a fourth here would hand them their longest ever winning streak in the Bundesliga! One of those victories came at the home of their rivals Hertha (4-1), which ended a run of four league away defeats, all without scoring a single goal. That derby victory on the road could have given the visitors the psychological boost they needed, although that may well have taken a knock on Wednesday. Yet if they can overcome that cup blow to secure a crucial win here, then Urs Fischer’s men will reach 50 points and match their best-ever Bundesliga points tally, with three games still to play.

Leipzig’s Dominik Szoboszlai has three goal contributions across his last two Bundesliga matches – helping to secure two wins ‘to nil’. Eight of Taiwo Awoniyi’s 13 league goals this season for Union have been match openers, which is a joint-league high coming into the round. Both Leipzig (8.53) and Union (8.63) have the two lowest Bundesliga averages in terms of match corners per game this season.
