Ancelotti will be looking for balance

Champions League and LaLiga winners Real Madrid began by implementing a specific style of play when last season kicked off and changed their philosophy over the last few games of 2021/22. Teams change throughout a campaign, as the physical and mental state of the players can alter, with some of them growing into the season and grabbing the opportunities given to them. Carlo Ancelotti knew how to adapt to what the squad demanded at any given moment. The results were there, and no one could deny the success achieved by the team. He will do it again in the season that will kick off on August 12 with the European Super Cup against Europa League winners Eintracht Frankfurt.

He will be looking for balance and will not turn his back on the fact that the midfield has been strengthened in the best possible way and that he must make the most of it.

The arrival of Aurelien Tchouameni has changed the panorama a lot

Real Madrid’s squad will not be exactly the same as last season, and their play style could also change. With Gareth Bale, Eden Hazard, Marco Asensio, Vinicius Junior and Rodrygo Goes being his attacking options last season, Ancelotti opted for a 4-3-3 formation with two wingers and without a playmaker. In the last few games of the season, he shifted to a 4-4-2, with Fede Valverde being the extra man in midfield. The arrival of Aurelien Tchouameni has changed the panorama a lot. Toni Kroos, Casemiro and Luka Modric will continue to be very important for Ancelotti. Still, the Frenchman’s signing offers Real Madrid the opportunity to introduce pressure high up the pitch into their game when Tchouameni is in midfield alongside Valverde and Eduardo Camavinga.

Furthermore, the squad’s presence of up to seven midfielders is not expected to affect Real Madrid’s attacking prowess, thanks to Karim Benzema, Vinicius, Rodrygo and Asensio. The France international and Vinicius are undisputed starters, but Ancelotti told Real Madrid directors that “we’ll have to come up with something when Benzema can’t play”. If the Belgium international maintains his desire to work, this could involve playing with two wingers such as Rodrygo and Vinicius and even with Hazard up front. Apart from that, academy graduate Juanmi Latasa or even Mariano Diaz and Borja Mayoral could also contribute at times. The potential signing of a new forward is not considered as a priority for Los Blancos for the time being, as Asensio’s future remains unclear.
