The Sri Lanka Cricket Board will name a replacement shortly. Known for his raw pace and the ability to rush batters off the surface, the 32 year-old Chameera has picked up 55 wickets in T20Is for Sri Lanka in as many games at an economy hovering around 8.09. He has always been highly regarded by the selectors but has been plagued with injury issues, more so since 2022. He was ruled out of the Asia Cup and subsequently the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in Australia in that year due to a calf injury. This was followed by the Asia Cup in 2023 due to a shoulder injury and was initially not selected for the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 before he was named as a replacement for Matheesha Pathirana. He was also ruled out midway through the Afghanistan and Bangladesh home series earlier this year due to a quadriceps injury. More recently, although he was selected for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup played last month, he didn’t make any appearance for the island nation. Chameera made five appearances for the Kandy Falcons during the recently concluded Lanka Premier League (LPL) but didn’t feature in the latter half of the competition.
