Bangladesh Cricket Board Leadership Change Aimed at Improving Performance
Recent changes in leadership at the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) were made with the sole intention of enhancing the performance and development of cricket in the country. Aminul Islam Bulbul has taken over the presidency from Faruque Ahmed, following concerns about the decline in cricket standards.
Performance-Driven Change
Sports advisor Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuyain emphasized that the decision to replace Faruque Ahmed with Aminul Islam Bulbul was a result of the board’s failure to meet expectations and address the deteriorating state of cricket in Bangladesh. Speaking at a media interaction during the national handball championship, Asif highlighted the need to prevent cricket from sinking further.
“We had certain expectations from the cricket board. Unfortunately, we did not see development matching those expectations. The state of cricket is deteriorating day by day. I cannot let cricket sink under my watch,” Asif said.
Concerns Over Mismanagement
Serious concerns arose following reports of mismanagement during the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL), which led to a fact-finding committee uncovering administrative irregularities that put financial strain on the board. While no evidence of corruption was found, significant administrative failures were identified, prompting a reassessment of leadership performance.
“We didn’t find any evidence of corruption, but the BPL report made it clear there were significant administrative failures. In such situations, the performance of the leadership must be assessed,” Asif explained.
Accountability and Evaluation
The decision to change leadership came after eight out of nine BCB directors nominated by the National Sports Council submitted a no-confidence motion against Faruque Ahmed. Asif stressed the importance of accountability and performance evaluation in sports administration, likening it to the dropping of a player for repeated failures.
“Like in cricket, you need a team to function. At BCB, there was no team. Directors were not comfortable working with him. This is not about removing someone in disgrace. It’s about performance,” Asif stated.
Global Recognition and Future Plans
Asif reassured that the change in leadership had been communicated to the International Cricket Council (ICC) and was welcomed by the global governing body. He also mentioned that Aminul Islam Bulbul’s appointment is not set in stone, with the next BCB election tentatively scheduled for October.
“We didn’t set a term for Aminul Bhai. He agreed to serve out of commitment to cricket, even though he’s giving up a salaried ICC position for an honorary role,” Asif added.
Overall, the leadership change at the BCB reflects a commitment to improving cricket performance in Bangladesh and ensuring accountability in sports administration.

Continual Evaluation and Adaptation
Continuous evaluation of performance metrics, stakeholder feedback, and industry trends is essential for the BCB to adapt and evolve in a dynamic environment. By remaining agile and responsive to changing circumstances, the board can make informed decisions that drive progress and success in Bangladeshi cricket.
