According to reports, Chelsea have set their sights on Inter Milan winger Denzel Dumfries after narrowly missing out on long-term target Jules Kounde.

Inter are keen to sell one of their assets this summer due to their recent financial difficulties.

And the Blues are apparently planning a move for defender Dumfries to take advantage of the Nerazzurri’s problems.

Thomas Tuchel’s team has been chasing Sevilla defender Kounde all summer, but have been frustrated by their inability to reach an agreement with the Spanish club.

Barcelona has hijacked the trade and surged to the front of the queue for the Frenchman’s signature, in a spectacular turn of events.

Barcelona used a similar transfer strategy to get Brazilian winger Raphinha from Leeds earlier in the window, sneaking past Chelsea.

Chelsea defender Andreas Christensen has already moved to the Nou Camp, and it appeared like Cesar Azpilicueta and Marcos Alonso would follow suit. However, in response to missing out on Kounde, the Blues have now blocked the pair’s transfer.
As a result, Tuchel’s team has moved its focus to acquiring Inter’s Dumfries. The Blues have already dealt with Inter in this transfer window, with Romelu Lukaku agreeing to return to the Italian giants on loan.

Dumfries scored nine goals in 33 Serie A games last season and impressed during his first season in Italy.

The Dutchman was often used in Simone Inzaghi’s side’s right wing-back spot, which could indicate a more permanent shift to centre-back or midfield for Blues academy graduate Reece James.

Chelsea’s second defensive signing from Serie A this summer, following the arrival of Napoli center-back Kalidou Koulibaly, would be Dumfries.

Tuchel has made no secret of his desire for defensive reinforcements following the free transfers of Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen.

The Blues’ defensive flaws were exposed in a 4-0 pre-season friendly loss to London rivals Arsenal last week. The addition of Dumfries would surely help to alleviate some of those concerns.
