Chelsea fans were perplexed after speculations linked them to the £60 million transfer of Everton winger Anthony Gordon.
Everton has turned down four overtures from the Blues for Gordon, but the Londoners are still putting Everton’s desire to keep their youth product to the test.
Following the rejection of a £45m plus £5m add-ons bid, Chelsea are now willing to pay a guaranteed £50m with a further £10m in add-ons for the 21-year-old.
Chelsea supporters flocked to social media to express their displeasure, with many believing Callum Hudson-Odoi is a better player than Gordon.
‘#CFC buying Anthony Gordon from Everton for £60m as Callum Hudson-Odoi becomes restless on the bench is weird from Chelsea,’ one supporter tweeted. A ridiculous amount of money is being spent, and talent is leaving.’ Similarly, they could have saved £100 million by giving Lukaku’s minutes to Tammy.’
‘Gordon, don’t sign! He just has four league goals last season; Odoi had four league goals in five years; keep him even if he isn’t producing!’ a third Chelsea supporter stated
A fourth admirer expressed similar sentiments, writing: ‘Chelsea are crazy. Why do they need Gordon when Hudson-Odoi and Barkley are literally better than him and play zero minutes?’
Hudson-Odoi has slipped lower down the pecking order this season, and he has yet to play a single minute of football.
Gordon, who has represented England from under-18 through under-21 level, would have the opportunity to play Champions League football if he joins Chelsea.
If the deal is completed by the deadline next Thursday, he will become Chelsea’s eighth summer acquisition, following Marc Cucurella, Raheem Sterling, Kalidou Koulibaly, Carney Chukwuemeka, Cesare Casdei, and Gabriel Slonina.
Thomas Tuchel’s team were defeated 3-0 by Leeds at the weekend, but they will be hoping to get back on track when they face Leicester on Saturday.
