Freiburg manager Christian Streich was moved to tears after hearing fans sing his name in the club’s final game at Black Forest Stadium. Streich saw his team produce a sterling display to beat Augsburg 3-0 on Sunday, thanks to goals from Lukas Kubler, Lucas Holer and Vincenzo Grifo. Freiburg gave the Dreisamstadion the perfect send-off as they moved up to fifth in the Bundesliga standings, and Streich struggled to hold back his emotions after the final whistle. Freiburg initially started playing at Black Forest Stadium back in 1954, with Streich joining the club’s coaching ranks in 1995. The German was in charge of the U19s and took in a spell as the first-team assistant before becoming head coach in 2011, and supporters sang his name at the top of their lungs as he and the squad said their final goodbyes to the venue at the weekend.
‘It’s a matter of 25 years’
Streich also fought back the tears in his post-match interview with reporters as he said: “It’s a matter of 25 years. There’s too much to put into words. That’s all for now.” Freiburg captain Christian Gunter added on transferring the unique atmosphere to their new stadium: “I’m very pleased that we were able to say goodbye like that. When one sees how the fans experience football here, I’m not worried at all that it will be exactly the same in the new stadium. We’ll get off to a fast start and make it our new home.” Freiburg are scheduled to move to their new, bigger Europa-Park-Stadion after the international break, which was reportedly built at a total cost of €130 million.
The ground will officially open when Streich’s side play a friendly against second-division outfit FC St. Pauli on October 7, with a first Bundesliga outing against RB Leipzig set to follow nine days later.
