Chelsea’s new dawn was greeted by a late downfall from Wolves and an incomplete performance that was completely in line with their current spluttering trend.

There were glimpses of fluidity and relief from Thomas Tuchel’s players when Romelu Lukaku scored his first Premier League goals of 2022 to put them up 2-0, but these feelings were quickly overshadowed by dissatisfaction and fear.

Chelsea grabbed the lead thanks to a penalty granted by VAR Gillett for a simple foul on Lukaku by Saiss. As Lukaku attempted to prevent Saiss from ushering the ball out of play, the two players collided on the brink of the penalty area resulting to Saiss lifting a leg to attempt to prevent Lukaku from clambering over him in pursuit of the ball, which was still in play. There was very little physical touch. Certainly not enough to trip a huge man-like Lukaku, but he fell over, and after examining the replays on the monitor, referee Bankes judged it was within the box and warranted a penalty.

‘He’s a huge lump, it takes something for him to fall down, but I don’t believe there was anything,’ said Tony Roberts, Wolves goalie coach, who was filling in for head coach Bruno Lage, who was away with Covid, watching the game from the training field and communicating on the phone. ‘You know it’s a penalty once it goes to VAR,’ moaned Roberts.

Lukaku scored again seconds afterward. This time, a confident finish from the outside of the box to punish Wolves for a missed defensive pass.

Chelsea missed opportunities to extend their advantage, and the three Wolves replacements were crucial. Trinaco equalized in the 79th minute, beating Mendy with a clean left-footed shot from the edge of the box to provide an entertaining finale.

Raul Jimenez fizzed a shot over, and Trincao’s attempt clipped Silva and swerved away for a corner, before Coady leveled from a fantastic first-time cross sent by another substitute, Chiquinho.

Todd Boehly, the leader of the US consortium prepared to spend £4.25 billion for Chelsea, sat in the executive seats, his head in his hands, as Coady’s late header struck the net and Wolves fans in the Shed End celebrated furiously.
