McGregor is interested in buying Chelsea

The future of Chelsea is still up in the air after owner Roman Abramovich looked to pass on control of the club to the Blues’ charitable foundation. There have been rumours claiming that the Russian could look to sell the club, and Conor McGregor has emerged as an unlikely candidate to buy it. Abramovich bought Chelsea in 2003 but came under scrutiny because of his links to the Russian government that launched an invasion of Ukraine. In response, he released a statement on Saturday night. “During my nearly 20-year ownership of Chelsea, I have always viewed my role as a custodian of the club, whose job it is ensuring that we are as successful as we can be today, as well as build for the future, while also playing a positive role in our communities,” he said in a statement released on Chelsea’s website.

The Irishman could look to buy London club as part of a consortium

“I have always taken decisions with the club’s best interest at heart. I remain committed to these values. That is why I am today giving trustees of Chelsea’s charitable foundation the stewardship and care of Chelsea. I believe that currently, they are in the best position to look after the interests of the club, players, staff, and fans.” However, the trustees of the charitable foundation reported this to the Charity Commission in the UK, so Abramovich may need to look for another solution. In Conor McGregor, he may have one. The Irish MMA fighter announced on Wednesday evening that he would purchase the Premier League club. “I wish to explore this,” he wrote in a tweet, which included a screenshot of a WhatsApp conversation in which he was told that Chelsea will be put up for sale for three bn pounds.

McGregor is a football fan. Even though his favourite club is Manchester United, he could look to buy the London club as part of a consortium. McGregor was ranked as the world’s highest-paid athlete by Forbes in 2021; however, his net worth isn’t believed to be close to the three billion pounds asking price. He would have to look to buy Chelsea as part of a consortium if he seriously wishes to pursue this.
