Joe Roots maiden century for the Roses is assured – England counterpart James Anderson gave Yorkshire a real chance at a LV Insurance County Championship draw with Lancashire at Headingley. James Anderson bowled England teammate Joe Root out for four – but Yorkshire held on to frustrate Lancashires quest for their first Roses County Championship win at Headingley since 2011.

Even in the first innings, this was a ferocious battle between both sides, perhaps intensified by James Andersons frustration over being left out of England team-mate Joe Root’s Test team-leading Caribbean tour squad in March.

Adam Leth, Dawid Malan and Root fell on each side by lunch, with the two lowest scores falling to Jimmy Andersons Lancashire when the score fell to 45 for three. On his way to a two-for-17 from 15 overs, Anderson, in song, tore through middle-order batsman and England teammate Joe Root’s stumps on a delivery which had gone faint until well after lunch.

On the way from 15 overs to 2 at 17, Lancashires Jimmy Anderson ripped the stumps inside and outside leg-stump, keeping deliveries short after lunch.

Yorkshire folded for 379 for 126.5 overs, and were asked to bat again, with Lancashire causing a subsequent collapse. In reply to Lancashires declared target of 566 for 9, Yorkshire slumped to 68 for 4 at the start of day three of this LV=Insurance County Championship game, but the Lancashire run was checked by Root. Despite a very good century from Root in Englands first innings, Yorkshire were made to chase down the score at 187 runs down, with their second innings starting poorly.

His maiden century off Roses included some sharp drives and formed the basis for Yorkshires stumping total of 356 for eight, and although they were 61 runs short of their follow-on target, a draw looked likely at this point. Keaton Jennings scored a magnificent 238 for Lancashire – the highest individual total by a county in Roses cricket – while Roots 147 first-innings stand in reply represented Roots maiden Roses county championship century. The first-class match between Lancashire and Yorkshire saw battles of James Anderson and Joe Root, the former pacers peach-pitching deliveries to the stumps.

Former England Test captain Joe Root held off the Lancashire attack that contained James Anderson to score his maiden century for the Roses and provide Yorkshire with hope they can avoid defeat at Headingley. Lancashires Jimmy Anderson dismissed England team-mate Joe Root for only four, but the Roses held on to frustrate Lancashires attempts at Lancashires first victory at Headingley in the LV=Insurance County Championship since 2011. Tom Bailey and Matt Parkinson stood out for Lancashire, taking three wickets each, with the latter taking a Joe Root catch at slip at the end of the day, opening up the prospect of a third Lancashire victory of the season. Harry Brooks magnificent summer continued unbeaten on 157 balls to 82, with Yorkshire sealing a draw on 6 for 169.
