Covid-19: Serie A awaits “make or break” decision

A decision from the Italian Government is imminent as doctors acknowledge it could be “make or break” for the Serie A season.

The Italian Serie A is hoping to follow the suit set by the German Bundesliga. Chancellor Angela Merkel gave the go-ahead to resume German football’s top and second tiers in the second half of May.

Serie A thereby hoping for a similar outcome when government officials and football’s hierarchy meet in the next 24 hours.

However, one of the key medical advisors to the Italian Football Federation insists that Serie A is in a very fragile position.

Professor Walter Della Frera said the next decision made by Italian football could be very positive or disastrous.

He said, “Tomorrow’s meeting will be decisive to see the final protocol for resuming training. It’s certainly positive that the Bundesliga did that. Players want to get back out there. But obviously, they remain worried about their safety and that of their families.”

“We know full well that there is no such thing as Zero risks right now. We have to write up a protocol that everyone can agree on and allow football to resume with as little risk of contagion as possible.”

“That is what the players are asking for. If they tell us that the risk is still too high, then the season will be suspended.”

“According to the current decree, the player should be isolated and the entire squad quarantined for 14 days. So, naturally, at that point, the season would be at risk.”

Torino player tests positive for COVID-19

A Torino player tested positive for the virus amid plans to resume the Serie A. The question now is does this put Torino back to the drawing board process and out for another 14 days?

The players tested positive two days after lockdown restrictions were eased on football clubs.

The statement read, “After an initial medical examination, one of our players has tested positive for COVID-19. The player, currently asymptomatic, has been immediately quarantined and will be constantly monitored in the upcoming days.”

It remains to be seen how the situation will affect the decisive meeting set to take place regarding the resumption of Serie A. Also, what will happen to Torino?
