Darwin Nunez went through several difficult periods before his fate went awry.

What did Darwin Nunez say?

A recording of the Reds signing the Uruguayan player showed how online insults early in his career made him sick, and how he eventually overcame outside pressure from fans. Darwin Nunez said he dealt with social media hate during the Under-20 FIFA World Cup in Poland. The Uruguay international also faced abuse during his first year at Benfica as the player struggled for consistency before enjoying a breakout campaign in 2021-22 to earn a transfer to Anfield. Darwin spoke with youth team assistant Axel Ocampo to improve his mental health amid his social media difficulties.

The Reds’ £64m signing said he used to look at social media a lot – but then saw comments he didn’t like. According to Darwin Nunez, they made him feel sick. Criticism began to fail him, and he had to talk to the national team psychologist Axel. Axel Ocampo helped him a lot, but the answer was simple. Now Nunez doesn’t turn on his cell phone in the dressing room to read what’s being said about him. Darwin only turns on his phone after games to talk to family and friends. Darwin Nunez says he will only listen to people who have supported him.

Darwin Nunez will rise again

In the midst of his Benfica abuse, Darwin posted a defiant message on IG, vowing to get the best from his critics. The Uruguayan national team player wrote that every time he falls, he will rise again a thousand times more and will always struggle. According to Nunez, this is another obstacle that he is going to overcome, he will continue to grow and dream. This will happen too!

Of course, he has surpassed all expectations of this past term to join the ranks of Europe’s most hyped young forwards. He scored 26 goals in 28 league appearances for Benfica in 2021-22 and also impressed in the Champions League. In the meantime, he is in Uruguay’s starting plans for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
