Daryll Mitchell shine for New Zealand, Bairstow, Overton rescue England on Stumps Day 2; trial by 65 runs

ENG vs NZ Live Score: Stunning batsman Jonny Bairstow scored a century in the second consecutive Test and rescued England from trouble in the third Test match of the series against New Zealand. The England team had lost its 6 wickets for just 55 runs in its first innings. Batting at number 5, Bairstow again took over the innings with Jamie Overton and made an unbeaten partnership of 209 runs for the 7th wicket. New Zealand scored 329 runs in their first innings. England is currently 65 runs behind New Zealand on the basis of first innings.

England had scored 264 runs for the loss of 6 wickets in 49 overs till the stumps on the second day. Jonny Bairstow was frozen at the crease after scoring 130 runs. At the same time, Jamie Overton, playing his first Test match, returned unbeaten on 89 runs. Bairstow has hit 21 fours in 126 balls so far. At the same time, Jamie also showed a wonderful game and hit 12 fours, 2 sixes in his unbeaten innings of 106 balls.

This is Bairstow’s century in the second consecutive Test match. He scored 136 runs in the last Test match played in Nottingham. In this way, the number of Test centuries of Bairstow has also reached 10. Earlier, Trent Boult shook the top order. He bowled openers Alex Lees, Ollie Pope and Jack Crowley, making England 17 for 3 in 6.5 overs. After this Tim Southee got Joe Root (5) caught by Tom Blundell.

Captain Ben Stokes also became the victim of Neil Wagner after scoring 18 runs. Ben Fox was also run by Wagner in his 12th over and England’s 6 wickets fell to just 55 runs. Then Bairstow and Jamie did not let any wicket fall till the end of the day’s play. England, however, took an unassailable 2-0 lead in the 3-match series.

England took two early wickets in the afternoon session to end New Zealand’s first innings on 329 runs, whose score was 325 for 8 by lunch. England spinner Jack Leach took 5 wickets for 100 runs. Then pacer Trent Boult (3 for 43) soon took 3 wickets for 17 runs for England.

Earlier, Tom Blundell could not take a review of his leg before decision as the DRS system was not working at that time as New Zealand scored 325 for 8 by lunch. Taking advantage of this technical problem, England’s pacer Matthew Potts took the wicket of Blundell, who scored 55 runs. Potts’ ball looked worth reviewing in normal condition but it ended Blundell’s innings. Blundell and Daryl Mitchell (109 runs) shared 195, 236 and 120 runs in the three-match series with England taking an unassailable 2-0 lead.

Daryl Mitchell hit his third century in the series by hitting spinner Jack Leach for a six. Leach dismissed Daryl Mitchell on the last ball of the session, whose catch was caught by Jack Crowley. Mitchell scored 108 runs at Lord’s ground and 190 runs at Trent Bridge. He also broke Martin Donnell’s record of scoring 492 runs for New Zealand in a series in England in 1949.

Tim Southee was dismissed after scoring 33 runs. Stuart Broad took 3 wickets for 62 runs. Wicketkeeper Ben Fox left Mitchell’s catch and gave him life for 80 runs. New Zealand started playing ahead of 225 runs for five wickets in the morning. In the opening session, the team also lost the wicket of Michael Bracewell (13).
